ASCE Hydropower Technical Committee
The ASCE Energy Division’s Hydropower Technical Committee supports hydropower generation through the sharing of knowledge, resources, and information for the benefit of its members, the hydropower industry, and society in general.

American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Power Division, Hydro Power Technical Committee
The committee, dedicated to furthering hydro engineering and education, is comprised of hydro users, researchers, and equipment builders. In addition to its semi-annual meetings, the committee collaborates with other technical organizations to sponsor seminars that relate to current hydro engineering issues, develop guides to mechanical engineering aspects of the powerhouse, and support other hydro activities.

Association of State Dam Safety Officials
The Association of State Dam Safety Officials (ASDSO) is a non-profit national organization dedicated to improving dam safety through research, education, and communication. ASDSO’s members include local, state, and federal dam representatives, manufacturers, consultants, and technical personnel. There are approximately 2,000 members from the U.S., Canada, and nine other countries.

Bonneville Power Association
The Bonneville Power Administration (BPA), headquartered in Portland, Oregon, is a federal agency under the U.S. Department of Energy. BPA serves the Pacific Northwest through operating an extensive electricity transmission system and marketing wholesale electrical power at cost from 31 federal dams, one non-federal nuclear plant, and other non-federal hydroelectric and wind energy generation facilities. BPA aims to be a national leader in providing high reliability, low rates consistent with sound business principles, responsible environmental stewardship, and accountability to the region.

Bureau of Reclamation, U.S. Department of the Interior
Reclamation is the largest wholesale water supplier and the second largest producer of hydroelectric power in the United States, with operations and facilities in the 17 Western States. Its facilities also provide substantial flood control, recreation, and fish and wildlife benefits.

Canadian Dam Association
The Canadian Dam Association (CDA) is concerned with technical, environmental, social, economic, legal, and administrative aspects of dams and their safety. The association was created from an amalgamation of the Canadian Dam Safety Association and the Canadian National Committee on Large Dams (CANCOLD). In addition to public safety considerations and protection of the environment, the association provides a forum for the exchange of ideas and experiences in the field of dam safety.

Canadian Hydropower Association
The Canadian Hydropower Association (CHA) represents the Canadian hydroelectricity industry. The CHA promotes the technical, economic, social, and environmental advantages of hydropower, and advocates the responsible development and use of hydropower to meet our present and future electricity needs in a sustainable manner. CHA membership includes hydroelectric producers as well as industry suppliers and consultants. CHA members represent more than 95% of the hydropower capacity in Canada.

City of Spokane
The City of Spokane's water system was established in 1883 and has grown and expanded with the City since. The original Upriver Dam and Pumping Station had a capacity of 10 million gallons a day. Capacity today is over 280 million gallons a day, with service to more than 217,000 people. The pumping system is powered by a 17.7 MW hydroelectric facility and excess power is sold to Avista Utilities.

Electric Power Research Institute
Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) is a collaborative science and technology development organization that conducts technical research and development for the electric utility industry. Through its hydro research program, EPRI performs research and development and provides products and services to help hydro plant owners and operators improve profitability and manage critical operational, maintenance, and environmental issues.

European Small Hydropower Association
The European Small Hydropower Association (ESHA) is a non-profit association that promotes renewable energies – small hydropower plants – with emphasis on environmental integration. Based in Brussels, ESHA plays an active role at the European political decision level via the dissemination of information, the organization and promotion of seminars and conferences, and through lobbying activities.

Federal Energy Regulatory Commission

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) is an independent agency that includes, among its many responsibilities:

  • Regulating the transmission and wholesale sales of electricity in interstate commerce;
  • Licensing, monitoring compliance, and implementing dam and public safety and security programs on jurisdictional hydropower projects;
  • Conducting the environmental review on jurisdictional hydroelectric projects; and
  • Monitoring, investigating, and ensuring compliance with market rules

The Foundation for Water and Energy Education (FWEE) is a non-profit organization providing balanced and informative views concerning the sources, benefits, and impact of using water as a renewable energy resource in the Northwest.

Hydro Equipment Association
The Hydro Equipment Association (HEA) was founded in May 2001 in the wake of the “World Commission on Dams (WCD)” process. HEA promotes sustainable development and public acceptance of hydropower through:

  • participating in the public debate about the development of energy supply strategies
  • taking full account of hydro’s techno-economical, social, environmental, and political aspects
  • being a partner in coalitions that promote good practice in hydroelectric projects.

Hydro Research Foundation
The Hydro Research Foundation (HRF) advances and promotes the benefits of hydropower. The HRF’s principal objectives are to facilitate research that advances hydroelectric technology, such as efficiency improvements and environmental enhancements; and to conduct educational programs aimed at the general public to build awareness of hydro’s many benefits.

Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Hydroelectric Power Subcommittee
The Hydroelectric Power Subcommittee is a subcommittee of the Energy Development and Power Generation Committee of the IEEE Power Engineering Society. The subcommittee’s purpose is the study and review of engineering and design aspects of hydroelectric generating station systems and equipment to develop standards, recommended practices, guides, and technical presentations with respect to hydro generating station systems and equipment.

The International Centre for Hydropower (ICH) is an international association of companies and organizations that are active in all aspects of hydropower generation and supply. Membership is open to all parties involved in the development, implementation, and operation of hydropower.

International Commission on Large Dams
The International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD) is the world’s leading professional organization dedicated to advancing the technology of dam engineering and supporting socially and environmentally responsible development of the world’s water resources. Comprised of the national committees of its 88 member countries, ICOLD provides a forum for exchanging information regarding design, construction, operation, and maintenance of large dams.

The International Hydropower Association (IHA) is a professional association created to advance knowledge on all aspects of hydropower and to evaluate and promote good practice. Through its international membership in 72 countries, IHA aims to increase awareness of the role hydropower plays in the sustainable development of the world’s water and energy resources.

International Network on Small Hydro Power
The International Network on Small Hydro Power is an international organization founded in 1994 with the co-sponsorship of UNDP, UNIDO, and the Chinese Government, under the initiative and advocacy of 20 other international, regional, and national energy organizations and institutions. Its sole goal is to promote the development of small hydropower, as an adequate, affordable, and environmentally friendly renewable energy worldwide. The Network now has a membership of over 110 organizations in more than 50 countries throughout the world.

The Northwest Hydroelectric Association (NWHA) provides a regional voice for the hydropower industry, representing the needs of its membership since 1981. NWHA is dedicated to the promotion of the region’s waterpower as a clean, efficient energy source while protecting the fisheries and environmental quality which characterize our Northwest region.

Tennessee Valley Authority
The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), established by Congress in 1933, is the nation’s largest public power provider and a regional economic development agency. TVA is also a steward of the Tennessee River, the fifth largest river system in the United States. TVA dams, reservoirs, locks, and power plants are managed as an integrated system for navigation, flood damage reduction, power production, water quality, water supply, recreation, and land use across seven southeastern states. Its hydropower system includes 29 conventional generating plants and one pumped-storage facility.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
With 75 hydroelectric facilities with a total capacity of nearly 21,000 MW, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is–by far–the U.S.’s largest producer of hydroelectric power. Corps water resource projects are constructed, operated, and maintained with funds appropriated by Congress; electricity generation revenues–exceeding $500 million per year are returned to the national treasury.

U.S. Hydropower Council for International Development
The U.S. Hydropower Council for International Development (USHCID) promotes the U.S. hydropower industry in the global marketplace and strives to develop hydropower in emerging markets. Run by a broad base of industry leaders, the organization provides input on global hydropower development strategies and acts as a domestic point of contact for foreign governments and business partners reaching out to the U.S. hydropower industry.

United States Society on Dams
The United States Society on Dams (USSD) is a nationwide professional organization dedicated to advancing the technology of dam planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance as well as to promoting awareness of the role of dams in the beneficial development of the nation’s water resources. USSD members are concerned with the technical, economic, environmental, safety, financial, and social viewpoints of dams and water resource projects.
